When creating each episode of Shadowland I tried to come up with new effects that really add to the atmosphere of the story. I added the creature effect because I felt that perhaps, the Shadows were not coming off to the audience as scary as I wanted them to be.
Here's how I did it:
1) I created a toddler with the skin that I wanted to use for your creature. (If at all possible make it a nude skin or create clothing that matches the skin exactly.) In Shadowland the creatures are all black.
2) Then I used the StretchSkeleton cheat to make the toddler appear distorted. In the series I did this so that it would seem almost spider like.
3) Before I started filming, I made sure everything in the shot would look normal if it was flipped upside down, for example, In the series I checked that no windows or doors were visible in the shot. I used a floor that looked like it could be the ceiling.
4) When the shot was ready, I had the toddler crawl directly toward the camera. (Once you have the shot you want it is ready to be used in your editing program.)
5) In my editing program I sped up the clip first, experimenting to what I feltd was most effective. This scampering look makes it scary in itself.
6) Finally, I flipped the clip upside down. This gave the illusion that the creature was the ceiling.
Thats it!!
