[edit] Before You Sign Up

[edit] Understanding Gameplay

We strongly recommend all new players read a game thread for a previous game before signing up to understand both how the flow of play works, and how posts and accusations are made. It can get somewhat heated, passions are stoked, and the excitement of the game can sometimes cause people to speak with conviction about the character of other players.

[edit] Liar Liar

Be aware that lying/dishonesty is a fundamental feature of this game. If you play, you accept the fact that some players may suspect you are a liar. Deal with it. It is not an insult to your real life character, but a comment on your roleplaying within this thread. If you are thin-skinned about being accused of lying, this game isn't for you.

This is a role-playing game. Please refrain from bringing any real world or even forum-related friendships or politics into the game.

[edit] Forum Rules

  • Regardless of how excited any player gets about the game, it is never acceptable to call names, be hateful to another player, or try to drive another player away. All forum rules still apply, and Sims99.com is a family friendly place with a positive and friendly tone.
  • Please keep this in mind when deciding how to couch your accusations.
  • We realise that sometimes brothers, sisters, spouses, roommates, etc may wish to both participate in the mafia game at the same time. It is essential to keep your role secret, and guard your email, passwords, and game accounts!
  • You, and only you, are responsible for everything that goes on with your own account, just as you would be for normal forum activity. Do not give your password to anyone else, and do not ask anyone else to post as you in the game thread.

[edit] Game Rules

Mafia is implementing a yellow card/red card (or for those not familiar with soccer, a "two-strike") policy with regards to rules and consequences. This means that the first time a rule is broken, a yellow card (strike) will be given to the player and s/he will be notified via Private Message by the Mafia Moderator. If the player breaks any rule again, a red card (second strike) will be given and the player will be removed from the game. If their characters are living, they will be mod-killed with no further explanation to living players. If their characters are dead, they will be removed from the Dead Thread and not permitted any contact concerning the game with any player living OR dead.

Receiving a red card (second strike) and being removed from the game means that player, should they choose to sign up for future Mafia games, will enter that next game with a yellow card (one strike).

"Infractable" Rules:

  • Players must not give away their 'real' identities at ANY point during the game. This applies to living, dead, and removed players. Do not ask. Do not tell. (Please note that you should NOT speculate, either publicly or in private messages or private forums, etc about the RL identities of others.)
  • Dead or removed players must not have game-related contact with living players. We understand that some of you are friends outside this game, and may be involved in movie projects or other activities together. Resist the temptation to talk about the game! The dead have access to information that can greatly influence the game for live players. Interfering in this way can, if severe and deliberate, earn the guilty party a permenant ban from this and future games. Any dead player giving information to a living player will be removed from the Dead Thread.
  • No dead player should give away information about another player. Once a player has died, they may have aquired special information. That goes to the grave with them! It should NOT be revealed to living players via a death scene (or any other method). The only player allowed to reveal their role/identity is that player themselves!
  • No Mafia player should ever give away the identities of their comrades, even after death. No exceptions. No hints. No sly and cleverly worded messages in images, poems, or signatures.
  • All players must use their RP accounts wisely. Abusing this accounts will be treated seriously.
  • All regular forum rules apply.
  • All moderators' decisions are final.

These rules are in place during the entire term of a game. If you are removed or killed, that does not mean you should not abide by the rules! These rules apply no matter the mode of communication, be it on the forum, in Private Messages, IMs, or smoke signals.

These rules serve to make the game fair and enjoyable for everyone.

[edit] Signup

Signups take place on the Sims99 Forums in the Mafia Section, which is part of the "Back Lot". The game moderators will then randomly select some of them to be a member of the "mafia" team and assign a few special "power" roles. These roles will be explained only to those receiving them.

no frame IMPORTANT: Only sign up to play Mafia if you know that you will have enough time to contribute atleast once every 96 hours (4 days). Once you sign up for Mafia there is no way to know how long you will be playing for. You could be playing anywhere from 2 days to 2 months!

[edit] Roleplay

Mafia can be played at many different levels and has many variations. On Sims99 it is played as an RPG, or Role Play Game. In Mafia you take on the role of somebody; it could be a man, woman, robot, alien, and many other creative civilisations.

For an extensive explanation of roleplay see: Here

[edit] Inactivity

Please note that playing in this game requires you to be very active in checking the thread. If you sign up to play but do not check in regularly and regularly miss voting periods you are seriously undermining the efforts of the Innocents and helping the Mafia win. If you are not sure that you will be an active player, do not sign up to play in this game or the other players will hate you for ruining their fun. If you do not post for a period of 4 days, you will be removed from the game. No information about the role of removed player will be given but the game will continue on as normal.

See: Day Phase section for how to handle short absences.

[edit] GamePlay

Each team (and some individual players) have tasks to perform in the "Day Phase" or "Night Phase" of the game. Play is accomplished by posting in the game thread on the forums, and the purpose of this posting is for the "innocent" team to try to discover who is mafia and remove them. The purpose of the mafia team is to hide their identities, and to work to kill as many innocents as possible.

[edit] Day Phase

During the Day Phase (this can last anywhere from a week to three days real time. See the specific instructions for each game for details), votes may be cast beginning after the mafia officially posts their kill. Every player, regardless of alignment, votes during the Day Phase.

[edit] How To Vote

Voting is as follows: use BOLD and BLUE font to highlight votes and vote changes. Don't use bold or blue font for anything else. This is to make it easier to follow the vote counts. If you change your vote, unvoting your previous vote is strongly recommended to remain in the game moderator's good graces.

* Note: each game may have specific terminology, such as the pirate game using the term "Plank" instead of Vote. Please carefully read the specific terminology instructions for your game.

[edit] Proxy Voting

We do understand that sometimes we all must take time away. If you know you are going to be away, you may assign a proxy to vote on your behalf, and this will keep you from being removed for inactivity. To do this, select someone active in the game that you trust to do as you instruct, and ask them IN THE GAME THREAD to be your proxy. It is wise to also indicate a back-up proxy in case that person cannot or does not want to take your vote.

In order to vote a proxy you have been granted by another player, simply indicate it like this:

   Proxy Vote for PlayerName: LynchChoiceName

You may only hold one proxy at a time.

[edit] Voting Details

A clobbering takes place during the Day phase when a majority of the living players have voted for a single player. After each clobbering, the mafia may perform another kill. You may also vote Abstain. This is a way of indicating that for whatever reason, you are refusing to choose a member of the crew to walk the plank that day. But use this option carefully, as having no opinion can be considered suspicious.

[edit] Losing Your Turn

If the mafia or the players fail to perform a clobbering/whacking by their deadline, they forfeit their turn. The mafias deadline for an execution is generally 48 hours. (See your game's instructions for timetables)

[edit] Special Roles

Special Roles will be informed of their timetables and restrictions via PM.

[edit] Night Phase

During the Night phase, the mafia will be trying to kill all the non-mafia(also referred to as innocents) while the other players are trying to deduce who among them are secretly mafia by examining voting patterns, voiced suspicions, or any other clues they may uncover.

The Mafia players will be informed of voting procedures via their secret forum.

During the night phase, there should be no discussion of guilt or innocence or suspicions on the game thread. In other words, no strategising, and no posting your last thoughts in case you get killed by the mafia during the night. If you have something to say about other players, say it during the day!

[edit] Death

After each clobbering and each whacking, the victim should compose a death scene, written from their own point of view to reveal their grizzly fate to the game. If they were clobbered by the innocents, they must also reveal whether or not they were mafia. (Those killed by mafia can reveal no information). Other than that, death scenes should reveal no useful information or clues of any kind.

Some players may in the course of the game obtain information on other players. If you are killed before you get to share that information with anyone, then it goes to the grave along with you. You are considered to be dead the moment the final vote for you is cast, not when you post your death scene.

[edit] Contacting Game Moderators

If you have questions about these rules, either ask in the appropriate thread, or if you feel that publicly asking your question would be unwise, send the Mafia Moderator a PM. Depending upon the question, we may send you a private answer, or post a public clarification.

The Mafia Moderators posts and decisions and word is final on any given subject.

[edit] Rule Modification

The game moderators reserve the right to create, cancel, or modify game rules in the event of unforeseen circumstances, game balance, or if we deem that a loophole is being exploited to the detriment of the game.
