Has this ever happened to you? You are excited because you're about to play The Sims 2. You put the disc into the computer and click play. You wait...and wait...ARGH!!! My game won't start! Here are a few tips for improving the chances of having a smooth running game.

There are a lot of bad files that can pop-up into your Sims Folder. From time to time these do need to be deleted in order to have a smooth running game.

[edit] The .catch Files

In your folder MyDocuments>EAGames>TheSims2 there could be the following four files which should be deleted every so often.

They are:

  • ContentRegistry
  • Cigen.cache
  • Groups.cache
  • Accesory.cache

Deleting these files will not negatively affect your game. Basically these folders make it easier for your game to recognise Custom Content (CC). Deleting these will make loading time slightly slower when you first restart the game.

[edit] Rogue CC Files

When downloading custom content for your game, be sure to be careful with what you download as some files could play up with your game. These rogue files need to be deleted so your game can work proparly agin. A program to help you is the Sims2 Clean Installer.

It is a good idea to organise your downloads folder and test whether or not the download affects your game. This will save you from going through tonnes of CC trying to find and delete the rogue folder which is affecting your game.
