Okay.. first.. none of the editors I have used (pinncale, vegas, magix or WMM) have a broken glass special effect.

So.. what I did was take the guy punching the punching bag object (to do this with normal clothes on, I had to use bodyshop to alter a full-body 'outfit' to be both 'everyday' and 'workout' clothing), move him in front of he mirror, film, and freeze the shot at the very end. I took that last frame and extended it a couple of seconds, so it would seem less abrupt.

Then I took another copy of that still shot and imported it into my art program. I personally use Corel Painter, but there may be other programs with similar functions.

I masked off the HIM that was outside the mirror. I wanted to apply the effect only to the mirror portion of the shot.

After experimenting with several effects, I settled on an effect called "shatter". I was hoping for a radial cracking effect, but this was as close as I could get.

I started with the area right around his hand. I made the "brush" small, and painted the effect around his hand.

Then I repeated this process on a copy of THAT copy of the picture, this time using a slightly larger "brush" and working outward in a circular pattern.

I did this 4 times... until the broken glass pieces were large and the entire "mirror" appeared broken.

Then I took those still shots and put them back into vegas, using a very subtle transition between each shot fading into the next, so it appeared to be one constant motion or animation.
